    Roger Bacon (Ilchester, c. 1214-Oxford, 1294) was an English scholastic philosopher, scientific protocol and theologian of the Franciscan order (traditionally, his name is cited followed by the initials O.F.M.). He is known by the nickname of Doctor Mirabilis ("Admirable Doctor", in Latin).

    Inspired by the works of Aristotle and later Arab authors such as Alhacén, he placed considerable emphasis on empiricism and has been presented as one of the first thinkers who proposed the modern scientific method.
