I would have to guess that the way to predict the future of the UNE Party is to look at what Tancredo Neves is doing now. It seems to me that the best way to measure the success of this party would be to see how it fares against the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB).

In the last election, the PMDB won eight seats in the Chamber of Deputies; the UNE Party won seven. The PMDB’s presidential candidate, Jose Sarney, won more votes than Tancredo Neves had received in his successful bid for President.

The UNE Party is the offspring of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB), which was founded in 1968; it is also related to the Brazilian People’s Party (PPB). Both parties are considered center-right. The main difference, however, is that the PMDB has always been more pragmatic than the PPB.
