Gregory Reinin was born on Christmas Day, December 25, 1967 in New York City. He grew up in Brooklyn, New York in a large Jewish family which emphasized philanthropy and education. He attended Brighton High School in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York where he was voted "Most Likely to Succeed".
Reinin was first interested in being a lawyer but changed after college to become a medical student. He then pursued a dual degree program at both Harvard University and Yale University.
In 1993, Reinin joined the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York City as a rehearsal director. For his work there he was nominated for a Tony Award for his work in "Promises, Promises" and for his work in "The Source". He was later appointed co-artistic director of the theater with Julie Taymor from 1996 to 2002.
