    Jules Verne was a scientist, author, and a captain of the world's first ocean liner. He was an inventor and a polymath, a true Renaissance man. He was a prolific writer, composing works on science and geography as well as fiction, and as such, his career as a writer spanned the entirety of the 19th century. He is one of the most influential scientists in history.

    Jules was born in Nantes, France on August 27, 1828, and began his education at the Jesuit college there. He moved to Paris in 1833 and attended school there until 1842, when he entered the University of Paris, studying physics before returning to Nantes for his law degree.

    He was employed as a school supervisor and became interested in the problems of science and geography. In 1860 he published his first novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, which introduced his most famous character, the astronomer and traveler Phileas Fogg.

    Jules Gabriel Verne (8 February 1828 – 24 March 1905) was a French novelist, poet, and playwright. Verne was born in the seaport of Nantes, where he was trained to follow in his father’s footsteps as a lawyer, but quit the profession early in life to write for magazines and the stage. His collaboration with the publisher Pierre-Jules Hetzel led to the creation of the Voyages extraordinaires, a widely popular series of scrupulously researched adventure novels including Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873).
