François Viète, or François Viette [1], in Latin Franciscus Vieta, was a French mathematician, born in Fontenay-le-Comte [2] (Vendée) in 1540 and died in Paris on February 23, 1603.
From a bourgeois family and with a legal background, he was the lawyer of great Protestant families, including the Parthenay-l'Archevêque and the Rohan, before becoming counsellor, then master of petitions at the parliament of Rennes, under Charles IX, and then master of ordinary petitions at the king's palace under Henry III. Master of Requests and deciphererer of Henri IV, member of the King's Council, he led, in parallel to these duties in the service of the State, a career as an "amateur" mathematician which earned him the esteem of the great professionals of his time.
