    St Gregory was born in Rome, Italy, in 579. He was the son of an English father and a Spanish mother, and he was brought up in a Christian home. At age 17 he entered the monastery of Monte Cassino, where he received a thorough education in Latin, Greek and theology. He studied law at Bologna, but his ambition was to become a priest.

    On April 28, 604, Gregory was ordained priest and chose to live a monastic life at the abbey of St Andrew, where he eventually became superior. He spent five years on a pilgrimage to various parts of Europe. He then returned to St Andrew’s in 609 where he lived until his death on March 12, 615.

    Gregory was elected pope in the year 604.
