The Emperor of Mexico was a hereditary title in the Spanish monarchy. It was first given in 1776 to Charles III of Spain and in 1821 to his son Ferdinand VII. He was also the King of Spain and Sovereign of the Two Sicilies. In 1759, Ferdinand VI married Maria Luisa of Parma. She was the eldest daughter of the late Charles III.

In 1808, when Ferdinand was deposed from the Spanish throne in the Peninsular War, his daughter Isabella was made queen in his place and Ferdinand continued to use the title of King of Spain and Iberia.

Ferdinand VII did not live to see Isabella accede to the throne nor did he live to see his son become the Emperor of Mexico. The last Spanish king to die in exile was Amadeo I of the House of Savoy (1902). He had been deposed in the 1868 Glorious Revolution and died in exile at Schloss Plassenburg (now Plzeň), Czech Republic on May 19, 1934.

Agustín de Iturbide (27 September 1783 – 19 July 1824), in full Agustín Cosme Damián de Iturbide y Arámburu, also known as Augustine of Mexico, was a Mexican army general and politician. During the Mexican War of Independence, he built a successful political and military coalition that took control in Mexico City on 27 September 1821, decisively gaining independence for Mexico. After the secession of Mexico was secured, he was proclaimed President of the Regency in 1821. A year later, he was announced as the Constitutional Emperor of Mexico, reigning briefly from 19 May 1822 to 19 March 1823.
