    Louise Michel
    INFP

    INFP (8w9)

Louise Michel personality type is INFP, which makes perfect sense for a woman who was arrested and imprisoned for her refusal to work in a factory. But here we see her as a symbol of the French Revolution and the French Resistance, as well as the anarchist movement.

As a literary device, the symbolism of the hidden face is common enough in any era, but the particular circumstances of the French Revolution and the French Resistance made this type of symbolism especially relevant.

The Hidden Face as a Symbol of Resistance

During the French Revolution and the French Resistance, the symbols of the revolution and the resistance were often hidden or disguised.

For example, during the Revolution, the first Revolutionary government was known as the Committee of Public Safety (a.k.a. Committee of Five Hundred) and it was led by Maximilien Robespierre. The second Revolutionary Government was known as the Committee of General Security (a.k.a. Committee of Twelve) and it was led by Georges Jacques Danton.

In addition, during the French Revolution many people were executed for refusing to work in factories or on farms, which were considered symbols of the old regime – a symbol of oppression – and refusal to work was therefore a sign of revolutionary resistance.

Louise Michel (29 May 1830 – 9 January 1905) was a teacher and important figure in the Paris Commune in 1871. Following her penal transportation to New Caledonia she embraced anarchism. During her stay there, she teached indigenous adults, adapting to their culture and language, as well as others deportees' children, including girls. When returning to France she emerged as an important French anarchist and went on speaking tours across Europe. Her use of a black flag at a demonstration in Paris in March 1883 was also the earliest known of what would become known as the anarchy black flag. She was also known as a convicted feminist, and has inspired many women and men across the centuries.
