    Manuel Azaña was a Spanish politician who served as Prime Minister of Spain during much of the Spanish Civil War (1936–39) and as President of the Second Spanish Republic (1931–36). He was also President of the International Committee of Intellectuals for the Defence of Culture during the German occupation of France. He was elected to the newly created Congress of Deputies in 1931. Azaña supported the Spanish coup d'état of July 1936. The Spanish Civil War led to his execution after the war, although his death sentence was commuted to one of life imprisonment by General Francisco Franco.

    Career

    Azaña was born at Ávila into a family of modest wealth. His mother died when he was five years old, and his father soon remarried. Azaña studied law at the University of Salamanca, graduating in 1897. His early career was devoted to teaching, but he soon turned to politics.
