Ippei was first introduced to Ryoma on the rooftop of the Aoba residence on the night of his first day at the Seishun Gakuen. Ryoma was sitting on a small wooden bench, with his feet up on another bench, and was reading a book. Ippei asked, “What are you reading?” Ryoma looked up and replied, “Cicada.”

Later, on the night of the first night at the dorms, Ryoma came up to him and asked, “Hey, do you want to play catch?” Ippei said yes and they played catch for a little while before Ippei said he had to go and go to bed. It was then that Ryoma mentioned that he had been studying English since the previous day and asked if he could help Ippei with it. Ippei agreed and Ryoma proceeded to teach him some English words.
