Esperanto is a constructed language, designed in 1887 by L. L. Zamenhof to serve as the common language of the most civilised and most enlightened people on earth. It is intended for speakers of all races and nationalities and it is written in a phonetic alphabet with no vowels.
Zamenhof’s vision was that Esperanto would be a language that could be learned in days rather than years and that it would be an ideal language for the international communication of the future. He also hoped that Esperanto would become a global lingua franca and that it would be the common language of the future. The development of Esperanto has been supported by people of almost every nationality and race, including members of the Communist Party in China, India, and Russia, and by many members of the Nazi Party between 1933 and 1945.
Zamenhof wrote his first article about Esperanto in 1887, while he was still a student in Białystok. He continued to write on the subject of his lifelong interest.
Esperanto (/ˌɛspəˈrɑːntoʊ, -ˈræn-/) is the most widely spoken constructed international auxiliary language. It was created by Polish ophthalmologist L. L. Zamenhof in 1887. Zamenhof first described the language in The International Language, which he published in five languages under the pseudonym "Doktoro Esperanto". (This book is often nicknamed in Esperanto as la Unua Libro i.e. The First Book.) The word esperanto translates into English as "one who hopes".
