So, who is this Officer Callahan, and where did he come from? According to the original book by Walter Mosley, Officer Callahan was a Los Angeles police officer who ended up as a detective. In the book ‘Eyes on the Street’, as a young man, Officer Callahan was involved in the investigation of a murder of a young girl named Claudette Colbert. This is where his career as a detective began.
In the book ‘Eyes on the Street’, there is a character, a detective named Harry Bosch, who goes under the name of Harry Nelson. So, it is possible that Walter Mosley based the character of Harry Bosch off of Officer Callahan. Either way, Harry Nelson is a detective in the book. In the later novels, including ‘Devil Eye’, there was a character named Harry Bosch who was a police officer until he was fired for shooting a suspect. This Harry Bosch is very different from Officer Callahan. It is possible that the character of Harry Bosch was created later on, and was inspired by Officer Callahan.
