In his book, he talks about how he was looking for a new challenge in his career, and the very first job he was offered was a position at a newspaper that he couldn't believe would even consider a person with a severe hearing problem.

"My new job would be to type up stories from my boss at a newspaper," he says. "I was a reporter, but I had a severe hearing problem, and my job would be to type up the stories he wrote for the paper. I was like, 'I can't read anything, and I can't hear very well,' and the people I talked to at the newspaper said, 'Well, we'll test you out and see if you can do it.' "

Cranes are a family, the Gruidae, of large, long-legged, and long-necked birds in the group Gruiformes. The 15 species of cranes are placed in 3 genera, Antigone, Balearica, and Grus. Unlike the similar-looking but unrelated herons, cranes fly with necks outstretched, not pulled back. Cranes live on all continents except Antarctica and South America.

They are opportunistic feeders that change their diets according to the season and their own nutrient requirements. They eat a range of items from suitably sized small rodents, fish, amphibians, and insects to grain and berries.

Cranes construct platform nests in shallow water, and typically lay two eggs at a time. Both parents help to rear the young, which remain with them until the next breeding season
