Sumire Uesaka personality type is INTP, which is just as it sounds: an "introverted intuitive thinking" personality type. I hear it more and more often that INTPs are shy and introverted, yet I've had several INTPs tell me that they're not, and it's always because they don't think of themselves as shy. They hate the way people think of them as shy, so there's no value in thinking of themselves as such. This is true of any personality type. There's no point in putting up a reputation as something you hate! However, I think this does help explain why INTPs don't just do what other types do, even when it's in their best interest. They may think that they're not shy, but deep down they know that they are. And they may not even mind that.
So, about their low social confidence. I've seen this explained in two ways: 1) INTPs are introverts, so they don't get out much, or 2) INTPs are so focused on their work that they don't care about socializing much. I personally prefer the second explanation, because it's consistent with the fact that INTPs are introverted.
