Psychological themes [ edit ]
Themes of illness and death are present throughout the story. Amanda has a serious blood disease that she is very secretive about, and even her parents are unaware of it. She does not tell her parents her real name until the end of the story, when she is about to die. The disease is explained in some detail, but Amanda never tells her parents that she has it. When they learn about it, they are concerned and promptly take her to a hospital.
