Taimur Abdaal is famous for his activism against the Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI), the sectarian Islamist group with close links to Pakistan’s military, which is accused of waging a reign of terror in Bangladesh. He has led three large protests in the capital Dhaka, which have attracted thousands of people, calling on the government to dismantle the JeI.
Since 2004, Taimur Abdaal has been a regular on TV screens across Bangladesh, speaking out against injustices carried out by the JeI and other militant groups. His first appearance on national TV was a TEDx Talk he gave at a school in a poor neighbourhood of Dhaka, where he talked about the JeI’s reputation as a violent group which targets people who don’t share its ideology.
In 2009, he was arrested and accused of inciting religious hatred. In 2011, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in an attack on a JeI mosque in Dhaka.
