Borromini had no experience with classical architecture when he was asked to design the facade of Santa Maria della Vittoria, his first major project. He had studied architecture at a Jesuit college, and he had been working as a teacher at the school when the commission came.
He designed the facade in 1634, and it was finished in 1638. It is an elaborate example of the classic, symmetrical style that characterized the Italian Baroque.
The facade features an array of different parts, including a large, stone portal with an ornate, sculpted relief that is probably an allegory of the city of Rome itself. The relief depicts the four cardinal virtues: Justice, Prudence, Temperance, and Fortitude.
Borromini obviously had a good understanding of human psychology, because he modeled the human image on the allegorical relief. The figure is a young man wearing a gold-trimmed toga, with a jeweled crown. He wears a laurel wreath on his head and is holding a pair of scales.
