He entered the University of Warsaw in 1939, where he studied history. He graduated in 1939, and shortly thereafter, Poland was invaded by Germany. Beksiński was drafted into the Polish Army, where he served until 1944. He then joined the Communist Party of Poland, where he remained until his death in 1976. Beksiński was an avid reader, and he became an editor at the Polish Institute of International Affairs. He also worked at the Institute for Polish-Soviet Friendship, where he wrote several books on the Soviet Union. He published his most famous work in 1965, The Soviet Union in World Politics. Beksiński died in 1976 at the age of 52 in Warsaw.
Zdzisław Beksiński (pronounced [ˈzd͡ʑiswaf bɛkˈɕiɲskʲi]; 24 February 1929 – 21 February 2005) was a Polish painter, photographer and sculptor, specializing in the field of dystopiansurrealism. Beksiński did his paintings and drawings in what he called either a 'Baroque' or a 'Gothic' manner. His creations were made mainly in two periods. The first period of work is generally considered to contain expressionistic color, with a strong style of "utopian realism" and surreal architecture, like a doomsday scenario. The second period contained more abstract style, with the main features of formalism.
