During the series' production, David was typecast as an eccentric, but well-intentioned scientist who communicates with machines to the point of obsession, which he attributes to a "machine mind". This mental "tinkering" serves as a metaphor for his own internal struggle with the machine-like thinking associated with his INTP personality. He often uses this machine-like thinking to help him defend his position as a good, albeit quirky, scientist. He first appeared as a supporting character in "Nemesis", and became a regular cast member from Season 2 on.
In the books, David is portrayed as a malevolent genius who operates as a terrorist and a criminal mastermind bent on world domination, as well as a genius inventor. In the first season of the television series, however, he is depicted as a comparatively harmless, but eccentric scientist who operates under the assumption that machines have higher intelligence than humans, and may have even been created by aliens.
