    Elizabeth Smallwood
    ISTJ

    ISTJ (1w2)

Elizabeth Smallwood personality type is ISTJ, and is a typical ISTJ in that she follows the traditional roles of a mother. She is loving and protective, but also firm and wants her children to grow up to be “independent,” which is why she strongly opposes Vicky’s desire to be a single mother.

The character is written with the continued presence of Smallwood’s small-town roots, as well as her “English-ness.” As one of the few characters of the family with a British accent, the character contributes to the overall feeling of nostalgia that seeps into the show.

Smallwood is most likely not a fan of modern technology, as she cannot understand why Vicky would want to use Skype to speak to her family. She also does not understand why Vicky would want to watch television on a computer, as she believes watching television is better done in a nice, warm room, with a big screen, and surrounded by family.

The character can be seen as a way to define the female characters of the show. While some of the female characters are shown to be extremely modern and independent, Smallwood is the foil that reminds viewers of the traditional values of the family.
