The Freemasons are a secret society believed to have been founded in 1717. The society is believed to have been started by a group of men who met at the Goose and Gridiron tavern in London, England. The society has been involved in the building of buildings such as the United States Capitol Building, the Buckingham Palace in London, and the Washington Monument, among many other structures. The society has also built a number of cathedrals.

The Freemasons have a number of rules which all members must adhere to. If a Freemason breaks any one of these rules, he or she is expelled from the society. These rules include:

A member must be a man.

The member must be a white male.

A member may not be a Freemason for more than 20 years.

The member must believe in God.

A member may not be a Freemason if he or she is a Jew or if he or she has been excommunicated from any other religious organization.

A member must be at least 30 years old.

A member may not have been convicted of a felony.

Freemasonry or Masonry refers to fraternal organisations that trace their origins to the local guilds of stonemasons that, from the end of the 13th century, regulated the qualifications of stonemasons and their interaction with authorities and clients. Freemasonry has been the subject of numerous conspiracy theories throughout the years. Modern Freemasonry broadly consists of two main recognition groups: • Regular Freemasonry insists that a volume of scripture be open in a working lodge, that every member profess belief in a Supreme Being, that no women be admitted, and that the discussion of religion and politics be banned. • Continental Freemasonry consists of the jurisdictions that have removed some, or all, of these restrictions. The basic, local organisational unit of Freemasonry is the Lodge. These private Lodges are usually supervised at the regional level by a Grand Lodge or Grand Orient.
