The group was originally called the "Red Army Chamber Choir" and was directed by Valery Gergiev. Shortly after its inception, the choir was reorganized into the "Maggardekh Orchestra of the Red Army, with the participation of the Alexandrov Ensemble. The Alexandrov Ensemble was officially formed on October 20, 1950.

    Many of the original members of the Red Army Choir, who had trained at Moscow Conservatory, were executed during Stalin's purges of the 1930s.
