When he was growing up as a youngster in Philadelphia, Marsalis would sneak into the city’s famed Curtis Institute of Music and listen to his heroes play, including jazz greats like Charlie Parker and Ornette Coleman.
“I remember hearing ‘Round Midnight’ by [Thelonious] Monk, and knowing that I wanted to play like that,” Marsalis said.
