Norman Mailer personality type is INTP, the "I am", type. This personality type is characterized by a strong need to understand and to explain the world around him, and by a strong sense of self-determination and autonomy.

INTPs are typically in the top one percent of the population in terms of intelligence, and in the top five percent in terms of creativity. They are likely to succeed at many things in life, and they are likely to make their mark in a huge variety of fields.

INTPs do not respond well to being told what to do. They would rather work out their own approach to things on their own, and then work it out through communication with others. In fact, INTPs may feel that they have been told that they should do something simply because it is what others want from them.

INTPs can also become quite stressed out by a lack of structure in a situation, a lack of a defined goal. If they have a goal in mind, they will likely succeed, but if there is no clear direction or path to follow, they will feel stressed and confused.

These people have a tendency to respond strongly to criticism, but this is not usually a negative trait.
