Randall studied at the University of Chicago and worked at a number of jobs, including that of a teacher at the Newberry Library in Chicago. He was a member of the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity and was also a member of the English Department at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Randall Jarrell married Ruth Holladay in 1947, and was divorced from her in 1953. He died on March 20, 1964.
