He was also a very practical man. He believed in displaying his wealth at all times, and lived to be an old man. He was a practical man who loved to read, and he loved to learn and teach, and he loved to talk about the black experience in America. He attended and taught at Bowdoin College in Maine, and he taught at Rutgers in New Jersey, and he also taught at the black college in North Carolina. He was a good practical man who loved learning, who loved teaching, who loved being able to demonstrate his knowledge of history and of literature to the world.

For The New York Times, the best of these essays in addition to the novel put him "among the gods of America's literary Parnassus."[3] A posthumous novel, Juneteenth, was published after being assembled from voluminous notes he left upon his death.
