    In 2008, Rooney moved to the United States in order to work for a publisher of a lifestyle magazine based in New York City in a role that would enable her to travel around the world. However, when this opportunity was taken up by a different person, she took a break from journalism for a while.

    In 2009, Rooney founded her own magazine called The Style File. In 2010, she published her first book, Sally Rooney: Fashion Files, which was based on her column in The Style File. This book was followed by another one called Sally Rooney: Style Files in 2012.

    She has also written for other publications, including the Sunday Times Magazine's "The Diary" column.
