Edmund Lowry, Jr. was an American scientist, inventor, and philanthropist. He was born on February 9, 1937, in New York City. His father, Edmund Lowry Sr., was a chemistry professor, and his mother, Lillian Lowry, was a housewife. He was the youngest of the three children. His older sister, Judith Lowry Stuckey, was born in December 1935, and his older brother, James Lowry, was born in May 1937. His last sibling, James Phillip Lowry, was born on June 24, 1940.
Lowry attended Peekskill Military Academy, until he graduated from high school in 1955. He attended Amherst College from 1956 to 1958, but left without graduating. He worked at the Kraft Foods plant in the neighboring town of Bedford for five years.
In 1960, Lowry moved to England to work at Lever Brothers as a chemist. After being fired from Lever Brothers in 1968, he moved to the United States, where he worked at General Motors for eight years.
