It's not hard to see why Lyndon's life would be so different from the others he had known. He was born in Washington, D.C., where his father was a US Marshal. His mother was a nurse, and he had an older brother. Lyndon was the only child in the family to have a middle name, because his father insisted that his son have one. He spent much of his time reading, reading, reading. "When I was growing up I read everything that was printed," he said. "I read books that were not made for children." When he was nine years old, his father died in a car accident. Lyndon's mother died when he was 13 years old. His mother's death affected him so deeply that he virtually stopped talking for over a year. This didn't stop him from reading, though.
After his mother died, Lyndon went to live with his grandmother in Oklahoma. He thought this would be temporary but remained there until 1937, when he graduated from high school. He then went to the University of Arkansas, where he majored in journalism and minored in political science.
