His wife helped him get another five rejected manuscripts published as The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins (1939). He eventually received his first million-dollar check from Random House for Horton Hears a Who (1956).

    He died on September 24, 1991 at age 87 after a long battle with cancer and Parkinson's disease.
