Peter Tägtgren personality type is INTP, so I'm going to take a stab at what he's likely to have been thinking through at the time.
A1: The first thought that comes up for me is that this release required a lot of work, and that required a lot of time. In addition to writing the songs, he had to track them, mix them, and print the 12x12" covers. He also had to attend the recording sessions which were held in multiple locations. Then he had to work on the art for the 12x12" covers, which took at least one full day of work. And then he had to sort through all of this for perfection. And then he had to prepare the final masters (which took at least another full day's work). And then he had to make sure everything was shipped to the record companies.
A2: I'm guessing that the record companies requested some changes (likely some kind of remixing) which took some time to implement. At this point, there was still some time left on the deadline, but you want to make sure that every last minute counts, right?

He is the founder, main songwriter, lead vocalist, and guitarist of the death metal band Hypocrisy as well as the industrial metal band PAIN in which he is the only member. He is also the owner of The Abyss recording studio. He is also the co-founder of Lindemann, the music project between Tägtgren and Rammstein vocalist, Till Lindemann.
