I had always thought of myself as an introvert, but the books on personality types seemed to say that I was an extrovert—if that makes sense. I read that extroverts are outgoing, enthusiastic, people-oriented, and more sensual than introverts. That’s not me. I am more reserved, thoughtful, private, and less spontaneous than others. I guess I am, indeed, introverted. And my mother is not.

But then I realized that my mother’s personality is different from mine. She was always talkative, outgoing, and enthusiastic. She is the one who made the family gatherings—Christmas, New Year’s parties—and she was the one who brought us together—she’d call us all together for dinner or to go to the movies.
