Jandek's art can be traced back to his childhood in Louisiana where his parents were musicians and his father played the organ for his mother's church. There were only a few people in the world who understood him, but most of them were dead. The rest of the world saw him as an outsider, an oddity. He would often be mistaken for a boy scout. His mother often said that he had "the eyes of an angel."
He was born with Down Syndrome, but it never seemed to affect his moods or his behavior. He was bright and articulate when he was young, but when he got older, he became more aloof and eccentric, rarely speaking to anyone.
Jandek's parents divorced when he was 9-years-old. He spent most of his time in the basement with his father's collection of old records. Around the age of 12 he formed a deep bond with his older brother Donnie, who lived across the street. Donnie was kind of like a big brother to Jandek. They would sneak out at night to drink berry juice and listen to rock 'n' roll on Donnie's transistor radio.
Jandek is the musical project of Corwood Industries, a record label operating out of Houston, Texas. Since 1978, Jandek/Corwood Industries has independently released over 100 albums/DVDs of unusual, often emotionally dissolute folk and blues songs without ever granting more than the occasional interview or providing any biographical information. Jandek recordings have varied widely in style but are most commonly associated with a highly idiosyncratic and frequently atonal form of folk and blues music, often using an open and unconventional chord structure. Jandek's music is unique, but the lyrics closely mirror the country blues and folk traditions of East Texas. The name "Jandek" is intended to refer specifically to the musical project and not an individual, though Jandek is widely believed to be the brainchild of the enigmatic Sterling Smith who closely guards his privacy.
