Aristotelianism and Empiricism
In his famous book The Transcendental Temptation, the philosopher Paul Feyerabend criticizes the epistemological foundations of empiricism and the philosophy of science, a philosophy that he believes to be a myth. Feyerabend's main thesis is that a philosophical system should be rejected because it is based on a mistake. The mistake in this case, he says, is that of empiricism, which claims that all knowledge can be explained by experience. Empiricism believes that the only tool we have at our disposal to acquire knowledge is experience, which is how we get to know about the world. But Feyerabend argues that the opposite is true. In his view, empiricism is a myth, because it has been proven wrong in so many cases and is in fact totally inadequate in explaining the acquisition and transfer of knowledge in science and technology.
Feyerabend's critique of empiricism extends to all its philosophical and scientific ancestors, such as rationalism and scientific materialism.
Aristotelianism is a philosophical tradition inspired by the work of Aristotle, usually characterized by deductive logic and an analytic inductive method in the study of nature and natural law. It answers why-questions by a scheme of four causes, including purpose or teleology, and emphasizes virtue ethics. Aristotle and his school wrote tractates on physics, biology, metaphysics, logic, ethics, aesthetics, poetry, theatre, music, rhetoric, psychology, linguistics, economics, politics, and government. Any school of thought that takes one of Aristotle's distinctive positions as its starting point can be considered "Aristotelian" in the widest sense. This means that different Aristotelian theories may not have much in common as far as their actual content is concerned besides their shared reference to Aristotle. In Aristotle's time, philosophy included natural philosophy, which preceded the advent of modern science during the Scientific Revolution.
