Institutionalism is a school of economic thought that emerged in the United States in the early 20th century, primarily through the writings of Thorstein Veblen, John Rogers Commons and Wesley Clair Mitchell. It focuses on understanding the role of institutions in shaping the economic and social behavior of individuals. This movement reached its peak in the 1920s and 1930s, having a significant influence on the measures taken during the New Deal. The Institutionalist School includes legacies of the German Historical School. Institutionalist theses are sometimes considered to be close to substantivism, which is the approach developed by Karl Polanyi.
