Stalin is most famous for his political recidivism (he was in power more than 15 years in a row), but he is also famous for many things. You can find out more about his character and leadership ability in the video below.

Stalin’s political career began as a teenager, when he joined the Bolshevik Party. He soon got a job as a propagandist and agitator. In 1899, he founded a revolutionary group called “The Organization Bureau”, which aimed at overthrowing the government of Nicolas II. His success was unprecedented, as he managed to recruit more than 500 members. The group’s leaders were executed during the tsarist crackdown.

The post-revolutionary years were difficult for Stalin as he was unable to establish a full-time job that would allow him to support his family. In 1902, he became a police inspector. Later, he worked as a statistician and a director of a cooperative store. In 1906, he worked as a secretary at the Board of Education.

Joseph Vissarionovich Stalin (born Ioseb Besarionis dzе Jugashvili; 18 December [O.S. 6 December] 1878 – 5 March 1953) was the ruler of the Soviet Union from the mid-1920s until his death in 1953. He served as the general secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (1922–1952) and premier of the Soviet Union (1941–1953). Despite initially governing the Soviet Union as part of a collective leadership, he eventually consolidated power to become the country's de facto dictator by the 1930s. A communist ideologically committed to the Leninist interpretation of Marxism, Stalin formalised these ideas as Marxism–Leninism, while his own policies are known as Stalinism.
