Forbes was born in Dorchester, England. His parents were John Forbes, a meteorologist for the Royal Navy, and his wife, Dorothy (née Carr).[1] He has three older sisters, Joanna, Susan, and Angela. He attended the Cranwell School in Lincolnshire. After school, Forbes worked as a clerk in the Public Record Office, while taking evening classes in English language and literature at the University College of North Staffordshire.[2][3]
Forbes met his future wife, Nancy Salvesen, while both were working at the Foreign Office in London. They married in 1965, and had three children: Mark, Jamie and Emma. Forbes was widowed when his wife died of cancer in 2010.[4]

Forbes joined the BBC in 1972 to work in its Middle East department.
