History
The first written records of the Estonians date back to the 13th century when they were mentioned in connection with the Scandinavian crusades in Livonia. There is evidence that at that time they lived in what is today southern Finland and western Russia. The oldest known Estonian name is Vanema, found in a treaty between Denmark and Sweden in 1219. Later in history, the name of the country was spelled in several different ways: Esthonia, Estland and Esthonia. Today's official name is Eesti (Estonian).
