Jughead Jones was created in 1941 for "Betty and Veronica" by writers John L. Goldwater and Bob Montana (who also created Archie). He debuted in "Jughead the Hunger Dog" #1.
Jughead was notable for being the love interest of both Betty and Veronica. He was not the first Archie character to be paired off with two girls, however, "Archie" creator Victor Fox had already paired Archie with both Betty and Veronica in his comic strips. When one of them died, he did two stories involving Betty mourning for her friend before pairing Archie off with both of them again. The same thing happened with Veronica. When she died, he did one story about her grieving, then paired her off with Archie again.
